Paper | Board | Tissue – Quality Control (Scanner) System

Paper Making – Dry End – Specialty Tissue

JASCH Gauging Systems offers a Cost-effective, Basic-level QCS systems for the paper, Kraft, board and tissue industry, for use where sophisticated DCS systems and CD controls are not cost effective or required. In every other way though, JASCH’s Paper Group with over 300 installations provides the sophistication of measurement and control needed to get the most out of medium to smaller paper machines.

Our measurement offerings include basis weight measurement using Beta sensors; moisture content using very accurate Mid spectrum Infrared sensors (transmission for fine paper and lighter paper grades up to 250 GSM) Microwave moisture where GSM is higher than 250 GSM in board applications; Ash measurement for substrates containing Clay, Calcium Carbonate & Titanium Dioxide, X-Ray sensors; Thickness measurement is provided with a very unique patented Caliper “Low Pressure Footprint” regardless of flutter and edge defects… Electromagnetic induction sensor.

Our EnvisionUltra controls include stock valve control for basis weight as well as moisture regulation through drying controls. Our simple QCS system provides the paper industry with basic measurement and control functions, while our EnvisionUltra-DataTrack-Active Web Analyzer system adds PC-based data presentation and management tools to more easily allow the mill process engineer to optimize machine performance.

JASCH Paper Pro products

In addition to applications for JASCH Paper Pro products at the Dry End, there are substantial benefits to be gained from measurement throughout the paper machine:

  • at the size press
  • in the press section
  • at the wet end

Improvements to press efficiency, as a direct result of press exit measurement, dramatically improve profitability. In addition, measurement and control of the size press profile may be used to correct profiles created in the press and drying sections of the machine. JASCH’s Paper Pro Team supplies scanning measurement systems and fixed point sensors for a variety of applications. A range of sensor/scanner designs are available to cope with the varied and often harsh environments.

JASCH’s EnvisionUltra applications provide enhanced production control of paper machines by integrating key machine variables from quality sensors and scanners, in a multi-variable control solution. Proprietary control algorithms are used to perform a predictive mathematical material and energy balance for overall production improvements. A tightly coupled, Roll Quality Management System Process Analyser is a diagnostic tool that determines the cause and effect of quality issues in web-based manufacturing processes. JASCH’s RQMS-Process Analyser captures data from continuous process variables, scanner quality profiles, discrete lab tests, and production events; and then presents them graphically to assist with the rapid diagnosis of quality issues.

Design and Construction

BTG-3000PP online measurement systems continuously monitor the basic parameters of the paper, like Basis weight, Moisture, Ash and Caliper. The deviations from the preset Target values are continuously displayed on the monitor and immediate corrections are applied to the production process through Machine Direction control of Basis weight, Moisture and Ash content, which in turn results in enhancement of the paper quality and material savings. In addition, Cross Direction control of Basis Weight, Moisture and Caliper can also be incorporated in association with partner companies. Worldwide installations are evidence of the market acceptance and capability of our BTG-3000PP QCS system.

1Technical Specifications
A Basis Weight Sensor – Beta Source”QCS measures the Basis weight (g/m2) which is the quality production parameter of the paper used by the operators to ensure that their production is always within the acceptable weight range. The measuring principle of Basis weight is based on the attenuation of Beta radiations emitted by a nuclear source as it passes through the paper/board. Basis Weight Sensor Specifications
  • Beta Transmission Sensor 200mCi Kr85 Radioisotope (10-1000 g/m2)or 500 mCi Pm147 (10-200 g/m2 ).
  • Accuracy & Repeatability : ±0.15% or 0.15 GSM (whichever the greater)
  • Sampling Time : 10msec
  • Air Gap : 10mm
  • Operating Temperature : 0-70OC
  • Ionization Chamber Detector
  • Integrated signal conversion through 24 bit A/D converter with in-built digital filters
  • Measuring Spot Size : 12mm
  • Insensitive to paper formation
B Moisture Sensor – NIR / Microwave The next most important measurement in the paper industry is the Moisture measurement. This measurement enables the machine operators to keep the water content in the paper within acceptable limits and is especially useful for optimizing the production capacity.
Based on the GSM range, two types of Moisture sensors can be offered i.e. Near Infra-red (IR) or the Microwave radiation type.
NIR sensor is most suitable for fine paper and lighter paper grades. The measurement is based on the principle that when infrared light passes through or is reflected by a paper sheet, it is preferentially absorbed at very specific wavelengths by the water in the sheet more so than fiber or other sheet components.
The Microwave Moisture Sensor is most suitable where GSM of paper is higher than 150 GSM and bulk moisture measurement is required or where there is high carbon black content in paper. The sensor is commonly used for Craft and Duplex boards. The moisture content measurement is based on shift in resonant frequency of a cylindrical cavity by presence of a strong dielectric, like water.

C Ash Sensor – X-ray The Ash measurement is based on the absorption of X-ray radiations by the inorganic materials like Clay, Calcium Carbonate & Titanium Dioxide in the paper and as these contents vary during production the transmitted radiations that are captured by the ion chamber type detector also vary accordingly.
Ash Sensor Specifications
  • X-Ray Transmission Sensor : 2W, 10KV (max)

D Caliper Sensor The Caliper measurement principle is based on electromagnetic induction produced by two contact type components, an inductive coil housed inside a sapphire disk and the ferrite target laminated with an ultra thin sapphire wafer, mounted on the opposite bellows. As the thickness of the paper passing through these bellows change, the distance between them also changes, resulting in the change of coil inductance which is measured through a coupled oscillator circuit.
